what about prodding questions? like, for example, if they're talking about something but getting bogged down in the details (like guin and i did), would it be okay to ask something to get everyone back on track?

Oh, absolutely. That's certainly the kind of thing that could be overdone, if it starts to seem like you're shooting down any hint of digression or brainstorming, but if things do get bogged down I don't see that a nudge of direction would be inappropriate.
