Mini plot post for August 22nd

He's gonna make you an offer that you can't refuse

Rumours about Vincent Albero taking on the Numbered himself have been grossly exaggerated. As it turns out, he just wants to have a chat with everyone!

Of course, to make sure he really does reach everyone he'll need to address the network somehow. And how better to do that than simply kidnap one of you hideous freaks to make a post for him?

We are looking for one character to get snatched up by mafia goons and be forced at gunpoint into making a network post. Assuming that nobody makes any rescue attempts or tries anything stupid, the character will be set free a few hours later! Huzzah!

There's a thread for kidnapping volunteers below, so please feel free to sign up there! We'll be making our decision within the next few days - priority will be given to characters who have not yet had major plot involvement, are publically "out" as numbered (or are easily identified as such), and who the mafia are at least likely to think would make an easy kidnapping target.

Why is change so hard?

As announced in the last plot post, the geography will drastically change starting on the 24th all the way through the 28th of August. A mountain is rising up insider the echo boundaries... and slowly, another change will happen as well, starting on the 26th and lasting through the end of August. The area west of the echo boundaries will drop as if there is suddenly a hole under it, first single buildings or parts of streets cracking down and then larger parts, at the same time as the lower areas both there and inside the echo boundaries will start to flood. The water is coming from under the echo boundaries, as if the inaccesibly a deep, large water reservoir there is opened and pressed out by something else shoving down on it...

While the rise of the mountain mysteriously protects the buildings on top of it, the structures adapting to the changed ground, the areas affected by the flooding will be less lucky, and unlike the areas that are rising, there will be forced evacuation for them as the pattern of holes in the ground opening and swallowing streets and houses is a lot more familiar to the officials.

The flooded areas and roughly five feet of land at its shores are also within the echo boundaries, that means that the echo boundaries have yet again expanded. At midnight between the 22nd/23rd, all characters from Middle Earth will notice a weaker version of the sensation that an echo causes them to feel.

In the end, the area will look like this:

Pink = Old echo boundary
Blue = Flooded areas. Some of those are quite deep and keep sinking, in others the tops of the buildings can still be seen.
Grey = Areas that rose. On top of the lower elevation to the south, the ruins of a city can be found; houses that formerly stood here are now located on the sides of the rock that it is located on. The green area north of it are The gates in the back of this picture.

Don't worry, they are only happy to see you!

In Locke as well as in Vegas, reporters will start to actively search out the numbered for an interview. They might ambush them in the streets, show up at their school or job, ring at their doors... And mostly ask questions from the following areas, with obvious variations due to location: The theft of project jump; the murders and abductions in Vegas; the big echo locations (the mysterious new church in Locke and the geology changes in Vegas); and intensely personal personal questions like "how do you shower, Mr dragon?" and "don't you worry that that additional wing on you will turn off the boys?". Some of the reporters are aware of there being more at more crimes against the numbered, but it isn't likely that it will be brought up even if the person is obviously injured.

Where two or three are gathered

The cultist conference log will go up tonight. All invitations have by now gone out, and Badri might have encouraged your character to go. More information will be given in the log post, but if any questions regarding the conference have cropped up or crop up in the future, please direct them to the General Questions thread.

Please direct questions regarding these plot points to the thread below and not the post in general.

Do us ME kids have to be in Las Vegas to get that feeling or will it apply to everyone irregardless? 'Cause I think everyone's in Locke right now.

Relevant question: does the pool where the teleported signal is still have water? Was it drained for the murder investigation? Is anyone coming to the meeting from Locke bear a 99% chance of being a bit damp?

Relevant to echo boundaries;

Does the widened boundaries covers the airbase where Virtue is currently located? And if so, is it affected by the rising mountain kingdom?

I have some logistical questions regarding Vegas.

first, what elevation is the Vegas strip at now, and how is the weather different? I'm assuming it will be somewhat cooler during the day and a lot cooler at night, like at Lake Tahoe, for instance.

second, and more importantly, there's a major disaster going on in the flooded areas obviously, but what about the strip? Are there drivable roads leading up the mountain from ground level? if not, how will food and supplies be delivered, tourists ferried back and forth, etc.? are hotels trying to operate in terms of business as usual or are most attractions and so forth shut down?

i'll be interested in hearing the full response. my concerns are these. when you cut a major metropolitan area from its supply lines by land and air, it's going to cause a lot of disruption in the short term. you say residents (and presumably tourists) will have to make sure they get food themselves. from where? there's a huge difference in capacity of llamas vs trucks, and helicopters vs. cargo jets. so people are going to starve unless the military/fema is doing food drops or something.

fun fact: mccellan international airport is the third busiest in the US.

this capacity bottleneck extends not only to food but tourists themselves. Even if the high rollers can still get up to the strip, the total number of visitors would have to drop significantly, leaving most hotel rooms empty, most seats in shows empty, etc. the tourist economy (most of it at least) would collapse. maybe a few hotels would be able to survive, but most would go under. roads and airports can be rebuilt of course, but that usually takes years, and it's unlikely the tourist industry as we know it in vegas would survive that long.

so i think it's a little unrealistic to think that an increase in the novelty/sensationalist factor would stimulate tourism enough to compensate for the destruction of air and land transportation. tourists might be interested in visiting, but they won't be able to actually get there in the numbers needed for the tourist economy to survive. so - this is a major economic disaster in addition to being a humanitarian one (the flooding).

is there a specific plot-related reason for destroying the roads and the airport?

So not related to the big echoes, exactly, but Lyall got his ass fired for being a werewolf. If he went to the teacher's union (I'm assuming there is one, anyway) or the state board would they support him in trying to get his job back, or tell him to take a hike, they don't want anything to do with this case?

Just for plotting purposes. If you don't have an opinion, I'll decide myself, but I figured I ought to ask :B

Name: Gail
Character being volunteered: Lyall [personal profile] professorwolf
Notes: He JUST went super-public about being a werewolf, plus apparently the mafia has had his name for a while now, due to a numbered person leaking it to them.

Name: Josh
Character being volunteered: Robyn Lyre (onecream_fivesugar sorry I'm on my phone at work and am too lazy to make it a link)
Notes: She isn't exactly public about being a numbered though she is terrible at hiding at hiding it. (she's now shown up twice to places where the aliens have been hanging out in public.) She's already had a run in with the mafia although she was in disguise for that. (though it would be hilarious if her superhero costume was that bad at concealing her identity.)

Name: Pyjak
Character being volunteered: Emilia Stacojiu
Notes: Physical changes are her red eyes so far, which she hides with sunglasses. In general she's not 'out' as a Numbered, so her powers, like her strength wouldn't be known by the Mafia. She doesn't quite know she can regenerate yet, though.

[personal profile] scramasax 2014-08-22 08:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Name: Blue
Character being volunteered: Anthony | [personal profile] scramasax
Notes: He's put his name out there, and he was along with Lyall in going visibly "super-public", and he's unmistakable. To comply with anything, he'd probably need more incentive than being held at gunpoint - but alas, he was told previously that going public for the greater good would be a bit of a chance-y idea. 8|b

[personal profile] espigeonage 2014-08-22 09:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Name: Joysweeper
Character being volunteered: Julien, [personal profile] espigeonage
Notes: He's big, really obvious, and nonviolent, despite being difficult to catch. (Snatch a hostage off the street and he'll fold, though) While he can echo back certain fighting skills and weapons, he's not terribly inclined and even his preincarnation in totality is limited in how well he can fight.

There's a possibility of him getting on the network beforehand and saying something, possibly in Elvish, and claiming to be praying if his murmuring is noticed. Lots of things would depend!

Jules has been around the plot at various points - he was there for Wise Snake, he was in blackouts, he dodged mafia goons, he was in Lyall's broadcase - but hasn't had any starring roles.

[personal profile] mood2wiingiing 2014-08-22 09:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Name: Kya
Character being volunteered: Soren Castor [personal profile] mood2wiingiing
Notes: He's not really PUBLICALLY out, but he doesn't try to hide his echoes any more either - so he's VERY obviously numbered to anyone who sees him. Horns, weirdass eyes, and yellow skin, yep. He has mostly flown under the radar plotwise too and I really want to get him involved! Last plot he did anything in was Wise Snake, and he wasn't a big player there. He's a kid so he probably would seem easily kidnappable, and he really would be because he'd probably scare easily and not attack. And he does go out to go to and fro Davin's house or game stores or w/e, going back to school soon... Basically very easy to snatch and intimidate, haha.

(also just remembered, he did post video of himself on reddit in an AMA months ago that could probably be traced to himself, and his identity as numbered is at least public knowledge at one of the middle schools due to his sister going there)

Name: Toss
Character being volunteered: John Smith/The Doctor [personal profile] gobybessie
Notes: Since he'll reluctantly go public about being Numbered like. Now. It'll probably bring quite some attention to him. Also while he's tall, he's still obviously a pretty old man. Frowny but seemingly harmless. He's never actually FOUGHT in anything.

I did offer him as someone to be leaked to the mafia, but I don't know the exact state of that.
