[media digest] The media probably don't bite, but do you really want to check?
With the media starting to play a larger role, the purpose of this post is to be a digest and master post for everything that the media (newspapers, radio, TV, internet, etc) have said and will say. This post covers what gets aired/published about the numbered up until the 27th of October. This includes content created by both players and mods, regardless of if it stems from numbered and their allies, their opponents, or neutral third sources.
GUIDELINES
- You may either link to a post that you made which contained a media voice (like this) or or create small articles/opinion pieces/internet discussions/interviews/statements/etc and put them into the body of the comment, (like this).
- Please use this form:
- Please use the appropriate one of these threads (up to the 13th of October, 14th-20th,21st-27th) to link/post your media voices.
- If your media voice talks about a small group of reincarnates or one reincarnate in specific, please make sure that you have their players' permission to have the media talk about them in this way.
THE GENERAL CURRENT STATE OF THE MEDIA
- There is a clear divide between different localities now in how the media treat reincarnates. While in Locke, the environment has grown very hostile and barely any even neutral voice remains, the numbered efforts to help their image and the fact that Albero has little influence and interest there have done something on the national level, where positive, negative and neutral voices remain in a balance, though they become less realistic by the day. Fundraisers for all kinds of causes and recipients have been started. In Las Vegas, the public opinion on the numbered is the most clearly reflected in the media, which creates somewhat of a mood whiplash in it: After the snake battle, there was a heavy surge of negative commentary, but not long after it turns into positive demands: Talk of why the numbered are bad and dangerous turned into talk of how that potential could be utilized for good, and how they owe the numbered to do so. In Germany/Austria, the media are a bit shell-shocked by the strange superhero problem entering their countries, and are still more on an investigative level - sure, the Bild and Krone open with "TERROR OR SALVATION - WHAT IS THE TOWER" and similar insightful headlines, but the more upper-end media voices are all trying to not judge yet and only up their coverage of both local and international news of the numbered.
- On the internet and other places where information is traded, voices are varied and shrill. The cultists are suspiciously absent from everything, and the seedlings as a result are much quieter as well, so that negative voices seem to have become stronger. There is however a surge of non-American bloggers and news articles, forums and so on that deal with the numbered after the Orbital Tower showed up, and the non-Americans are to large parts seeing the numbered in a positive light, so the balance almost tips towards positive.
- The attempts of reincarnated persons to enter the discussion on their own terms is treated differently. Some welcome it, others not, but whenever it happens it is discussed thoroughly in the media afterwards.
- All local Locke newspapers and radio programs are filled with negative pieces on one numbered or some/all of them as a group almost daily, though the reader's comments section might contain neutral pieces. A local Locke radio station, Energy Up, fills its free broadcasting time with more or less fact-based pieces about the reincarnates, laced with gossip and speculations about their mental state and how dangerous they really are to the city; cunning minds will notice that those numbered that have openly opposed Albero are featured more frequently, and that only when speaking of them the station comments also on their families.
- Fox News continues its morning magazine programme about the numbered worldwide, though heavily focusing on America, with more or less fact-based pieces about the reincarnates, laced with gossip and speculations about their mental state and how dangerous they really are, though they also start to accuse the numbered of everything that they figure to be wrong with the nation at this point.
- All news outlets in Vegas run pieces about specific numbered, and not only about those that are high-profile in some shape or form, but about everyone. Their opinion on the reincarnates is ever-changing and might be high positive, highly negative or anywhere in between.
- Last post's digest: # 26/8: An interview with Las Vegas organization "Friends of the Shell" # 26/8: An interview with numbered Locke resident John Smith # 7/9: Nora and Emil trash some Vermedi # 26/8: Ye olde Loch Locke Monster is spotted # 2/9: The ice bucket challenge reaches the numbered

Type of media/location if applicable: Energy Up's piece on Espresso Yourself
Link/Content: here and here (threads ongoing!)
>Good morning all you fresh-faced foxy Locke Citizens out there! We hope that in spite of troubled times the day has started pleasantly for our listeners. Now as the Sun creeps higher into the sky it's highly likely that a great number of you are coffee slaves off to feed your addiction. Are you going to Starbucks, or a smaller, quirkier place? How about a locally-run business known as Espresso Yourself, where monsters and men mingle? We sent two brave reporters into the belly of the beast to find out more about the secretive haven, Nick and Martin, and some of what they found out was simply intriguing. Care to share, Nick?
>>Of course. Thanks for the introduction, Tim. Well the place is decently put together and they serve a pretty good cup of espresso. But there's a lot of weird stuff going on and my hunch is that they're hiding a lot.
>Is that so?
>>Heck yes! The first thing that happened was the owner asked us to leave. Here's the recording if you don't believe me. Play that clip, would you?
Please leave.
>Well that's rude. Did he have any other comments?
>>None to speak of. He appeared unwell and retreated to the back room shortly after we arrived. It was cowardly if you ask me.
>Maybe not so cowardly. The last time Espresso Yourself was the center of media attention, he didn't exactly do his business's reputation any favors. (*Laughter*)Sounds responsible to me.
>>Still, his business, his responsibility to deal with problems. Their image is a problem right now. He could have helped matters and chose not to.
>Some people talked to you and Martin, though. Let's move on to them. Martin, let's take it to you!
>>>Well, uh... the first guy who gave us a proper interview was a giant bird. Man. Thing. He was polite enough and he's the one who excused the owner and said he was busy. He was pretty forthcoming! His name's Torin and he said that he was a bird before. I've got a clip of his voice, hang on...
That's right, I was a bird. And the thing with attaining sentience is that you become aware of things, like seed needing money. I wanted to pay my own way, not to rely on bird feeders and handouts from little old ladies in the park.
>Can you imagine a bird wanting to pay its own way and getting a job? Extraordinary. Just listen to that voice!
>>Yeah, it's definitely odd. He's a looker, too, can't possibly miss him. Red and blue feathers everywhere. Martin even said it looked like a costume later on after we left. Anyway, the bird-man-thing is apparently the manager and he has a big part in running the place. Wouldn't want to run into him in a dark alley, though, if you know what I mean.
>Let's take a call now. Hello, you're on the air, Mary from the business district!
I just wanted to say that I don't feel safe knowing that those Numbered are working together. Are we really supposed to believe that they're just selling coffee there? It's a great front for whatever conspiracy they're running if you ask me!
>That's an interesting point. Thank you, Mary. Let's take another call. Aziz from the south neighborhood! You're on the air, Aziz!
I have kids. I know we're taught to be kind to those who are different, but these aren't people who just look different. These are people who are destructive and can't always control themselves. That zombie that scooped out the old lady's brains? He works there, and I can't say I feel safe taking my family to a business that employs monsters.
>Thank you for your calls. We'll be taking more in a short while. Back to you, Nick; who else did you speak with while you were there?
>>A little numbered girl, looked to be in her teens. She had a set of small grey wings and called herself Rakka. She said she's been Numbered for almost a year; seemed harmless enough, but as others have pointed out before, you can't really tell a lot of times with these Numbered people just how harmless they actually are. Just because someone isn't big or muscle-bound doesn't mean they can't mess you up.
>With that attitude, she was pretty brave to talk to you! Are they fearless because they're brave or because they've got nothing to fear from us, I wonder.
>>>Some of them seem afraid, though.
>Back to Martin.
>>>The owner, for one. He didn't want to talk to us for a reason, and people seemed reluctant to let us get close to the zombie kid. I think that they were protecting them. Some of the Numbered are weak, and it looks like they watch each other's back. Sort of like an elephant herd, you know, how they put the babies in the middle and form a circle around them? Wow... lousy analogy, but you understand, right?
>>I'll remind you, Martin, that they just look harmless. You remember hearing about the zombie kid allegedly eating those brains, right?
>>>I guess.
>A couple of interviews were particularly feisty and I admit I've been looking forward to this segment. Tell us a bit about these individuals, Nick.
>>What can I say? They weren't just rude. I'd call these folks hostile. One was a tall guy with an accent from down south. Listen to some of the things he had to say!
You don't need to know my name. Ain't no one unwelcome if they don't act like a [BLEEP] while they're here.
>>Would you say we were acting like [BLEEP], Martin?
>>>I don't really reckon so. I did feel unwelcome, but. I don't know.
>Did you feel like you were in danger at any point?
>>Frankly I wondered whether I'd see my wife and kids again, Tim. Especially during the next interview I was shaking in my boots the whole time. Let's play some of those extremely hostile clips. We asked him about the previous incident at Espresso Yourself and he condoned the owner's actions completely.
I usually stop by around the same time for my coffee fix. So yah, I saw it. I figured he was showing some restraint considering I would've decked him if it was me.
>That's shocking. Threats to deck rude customers? Did you get the impression that he was serious? Back to you Martin.
>>>Uh. I'd feel better if Nick answered this. Sorry.
>>>He was dead serious. He told us all about the martial arts he knew and was willing to use against people.
I have a second degree belt in judo, a third degree in karate and at fifth degree in taekwondo, or are you talking in bar fights? I often get in them.
>That kind of violence is obviously worrisome in our community.
Are you stupid? I dislike stupid people. Right now, that means that I am disliking you.
>I've heard a lot in my years working on radio, but that's a pretty ballsy level of "hostile." Let's take another call. Jordan, calling from the Eastside!
I'm an American and I know this is gonna sound unconstitutional. I believe in freedom, ya know? But I'd feel a lot safer if I knew that these "Numbered" people were being... aw hell don't get me wrong, but some kind of registry? Maybe a place they could live away from us? I got kids too, like that other caller. I can explain why his friend in first grade is in a wheelchair, but... heck that's piece of cake compared to explaining what's happened in this city since the Numbered started showing up. I lost my aunt when that snake was crashing through the city. My little girl's scared of zombies because a kid in her class told her about that poor old woman. So yeah, I... I support some kind of registry at least. A way to be able to tell who we're dealing with.
>Any comment, Tim?
>>>I... I don't think they're all bad. I think that a lot of them are just good people in a bad situation. We talked to this white-haired kid, Tony Sparado. He's friends with the owner and was also involved in that one altercation at Espresso Yourself.
The problem, here, is to you guys we're a bunch of freaks. A circus act to be gawked at, animals in a cage wearing funny hats. And I have no way of knowing if you're gonna run the story you get from me, or if you're just gonna use it to stir up the hornet's nest. And I gotta say, I'm sure the hornet's nest will get you better ratings. But we forget hate crimes are a thing.
>>>He seemed to know something about being on hard times, and though he didn't want to talk at first we were able to convince him that maybe just being transparent would help them out. He didn't want to answer any questions about his boss except to say that he'd stepped down as manager voluntarily and promoted Torin to the position.
Judging someone by the way they look is pretty superficial, don't you think? I've met a lot of people no one else wants to admit are there. People swept aside and thrown away by their families and societies. Not just here, with the numbered, but others as well. After a while you stop seeing them as 'different' or 'strange'. They're just people, usually people in a rough patch. You can't fault 'em for that.
>>>I honestly felt bad for the kid.
We're the latest hot thing to hate.
>We have time for one more call. Lauren, from downtown, you're on the air.
I mean they sound like people. But I don't feel safe going to that coffee shop. I don't feel safe going out at night. Locke City's different now and there's so much more to be afraid of. My husband and I are moving to the west coast as soon as possible. It's no place to raise a family and I'm praying for the ones who are trying, but... it's not for us. I have to put my family first.
