ACTIVITY CHECK

Activity check will remain open until May 6th. Only activity from April 1st onwards will be acceptable. (i know, duh)

Note: Although it is impossible for any character to fail by insufficient activity this round, all players not on hiatus must reply by May 6th or be removed from the game. It is not necessary to fill out the below form. A note simply saying the player name and the character(s) played is acceptable. This would be the ordinary procedure for any character not in the game for less than a month and obviously that is all the characters this time. However, the more full responses we receive the better. The results will be used to gauge player comfort with the proposed requirements. If you do fill out the form, please do so as if your place in the game depended on it, to get more accurate results.

Please fill out the following form and add it in to this post.
Player Section
Paste once.

Activity Section
Paste once per character.

Feedback
Optional.

Thanks for being in the game!

Nothing else yet, but he's not even been in the game for 24 hours at this time.

How did you find meeting these requirements?: Not too bad, I thought it would be harder! But it does seem to depend a lot on what is going on as to how easy or hard it is.
Would you prefer more clearly defined requirements, or do you like the more open to interpretation system? I'd like to see something to define better what moderate length is. Everyone is bound to have different definitions and right now that is a bit unclear. It doesn't need a comment count to go with it, just something more clear and to cover things like other person dropping thread before conclusion, etc.
How quickly would you say it took you to reach the requirements? The threads wasn't hard, had that in about a day. The plot activity was a bit more tricky. It would help to see more plots open to a range of different skills so those who haven't regained combat abilities yet can get the chance to do so and those who never had any can have other ways to get involved or eventually learn. I'm sure I'm not alone with having trouble with that part.
General thoughts on the activity check: I appreciate the fact that we're given leeway on how to meet these requirements. While making a network post definitely seems to be the easiest way, if that wouldn't be IC we have other options.

How did you find meeting these requirements?: Fairly easy, so far. I think.
Would you prefer more clearly defined requirements, or do you like the more open to interpretation system? I'd like to see at least a ballpark figure on what's considered "moderate length".
How quickly would you say it took you to reach the requirements? A few days for the thread requirement, a couple of weeks for the plot relevant action.
General thoughts on the activity check: My character's threads seem to run under 10 comments per character in the thread (usually around 7 or 8 apiece). They're not just idle chit-chat, but I'm still worried that they might not be long enough. Possibly make an option to link to additional threads if your threads tend to run short?

How did you find meeting these requirements?: No problem at all with regards to the general thread count, but getting involved with plotty stuff was a bit tricky. I'll be working on that in the foreseeable future!
Would you prefer more clearly defined requirements, or do you like the more open to interpretation system? Definition on how long you'd like the threads to be would be excellent.
How quickly would you say it took you to reach the requirements? Probably within the first couple of days re: the thread requirement, but plot-relevant threads were obviously more difficult due to the nature of the event. Emery wouldn't have gone (and didn't go) on the badly planned werewolf hunt, nor would he feel comfortable with smashing the statue without knowing more about it. So, yes, that was a bit flat this round, but other than that everything is swell. :)
General thoughts on the activity check: I think I've got it covered!

How did you find meeting these requirements?: It wasn't bad, actually! RL has gotten in the way for me for a little over a week now, so I was a little worried about AC but I still didn't have trouble passing it since I was so active earlier in the month.

Would you prefer more clearly defined requirements, or do you like the more open to interpretation system? I'd prefer something that's a little more defined? Like maybe "threads with more than 4 comments from your character" or something along those lines.

How quickly would you say it took you to reach the requirements? I don't think it was long. Maybe a week or two?

General thoughts on the activity check: I really like that participating in the plot and interacting with several different characters are requirements. That should hopefully encourage people to do more than slice-of-life stuff, as well as reach out beyond their few favorite people to play.

How did you find meeting these requirements?: Pretty easy.
Would you prefer more clearly defined requirements, or do you like the more open to interpretation system?: Ummm, maybe have a comment count requirement, but I can see where that would be limiting so yeah. This seems pretty good.
How quickly would you say it took you to reach the requirements?: This question is unclear. Do you mean how long did it take me to do all the threads? 'Cause I sure as hell don't know. Otherwise, answering the check was pretty easy.
General thoughts on the activity check: One caveat: character squatters might just spam threads near when the activity check happens to rack up stuff to link. I would suggest including a date for when the thread happened in the "thread with character x" section to make this sorta stuff easier to spot. Maybe also add a section for players to mention whether they went on hiatus at any point during the month to explain possible gaps in activity.

I don't think we're going to have a problem with character squatting from what I've seen, but Lina brings up a good point, so I'm going to +1 the suggestion that we ask for dates with the threads or else a similar system to prevent this from happening.

From a mod perspective, I personally don't mind if people put up posts just before AC so they can avoid getting dropped (RL can bite you in the butt sometimes, shit happens and you can't always put up a hiatus notice in time), but if this is done then I expect that people actually, you know... tag back on them with some substance. Or else let the mod team know what's going on, since we don't want characters getting the boot if they don't deserve it.

Would you prefer more clearly defined requirements, or do you like the more open to interpretation system? I'd rather they were more clearly defined, so I have a better idea of which threads to use.

Thread 1: Thread with Bakura
Thread 2: Thread with Hijikata
Thread 3: Thread with Souji
Thread 4: Thread with Euphie

How did you find meeting these requirements?: Moderate. Tagging into enough things is easy; holding conversations long enough to call the threads "moderate" in length is harder, since Hajime really...isn't that chatty, and tends to just answer a question, make a point, and then shut up. To give some idea - I have about thirty things I tagged into on my AC spreadsheet, I didn't mark anything green until I had at least ten comments, and only about a fifth of my links made it there. (And some of those are multiples with the same character, so they wouldn't both be usable.)
Would you prefer more clearly defined requirements, or do you like the more open to interpretation system? I don't mind an open/flexible system but I do feel that having a range, even if not a specific comment count, would help a lot. The cutoff I gave myself of 10 comments is pretty arbitrary and I'm still not sure if it's what you're looking for or if I need something longer.
How quickly would you say it took you to reach the requirements? I had things covered in about a week, but my pace in getting long enough threads also slowed up considerably after that first week, so it's not the best meterstick.
General thoughts on the activity check: Echoing the comment Kazuma's player made, my threads nearly always run under ten comments and it does have me worried about whether that'll be viable in the future. Being able to link a couple extra to cover my ass if mine are all short would be a nice option. That said, that's my only real concern here, and I think having plot involvement as part of AC is a great move.

Would you prefer more clearly defined requirements, or do you like the more open to interpretation system? I'd prefer more clearly defined requirements, as it's always nice to know exactly how much activity is required. It's not a strong preference, though.
How quickly would you say it took you to reach the requirements? About a week
General thoughts on the activity check: Seems reasonable thus far.

How did you find meeting these requirements?: They weren't bad at all! I actually like the fact that posts aren't a requirement, and that threads can progress naturally because people aren't forcing things because of a comment count.
Would you prefer more clearly defined requirements, or do you like the more open to interpretation system? I think the open interpretation system works, especially for characters who are less verbal, like Legretta.
How quickly would you say it took you to reach the requirements? I don't think it took long at all. All of the plot elements have made it really easy to tag things, and the slower pace of the game makes it easy to keep up. :9

Would you prefer more clearly defined requirements, or do you like the more open to interpretation system? I personally prefer hard numbers, but I wouldn't mind sticking to the current vague system if you provide a few examples of threads that would be up near the line on either side of acceptable so players know what minimums to aim for.
How quickly would you say it took you to reach the requirements? A little over a week, give or take
General thoughts on the activity check: As previously mentioned, kinda vague, but otherwise I think it's right about my speed, since it's easier for me to enjoy a game when I'm not stressing about churning out tags at the same speed as some of my friends. How quickly would you say it took you to reach the requirements? lol idk?
General thoughts on the activity check: I feel like it wasn't quite as hard in this first month because everyone's open and eager to get CR with as many people as they can, but I feel like as the game settles in and we get factions and such (Which is natural, actually!) it's going to get much, much harder (I also know that I'm going to have to go through 1-2 months of very difficult job hunting and moving again soon, so that'll cut my activity, at least). I feel like cutting it to 2 threads with 2 different characters would help in that regard.
In general, I kind of hate the idea that AC has to be like grabbing an achievement or getting your daily quest done in an MMO.

How did you find meeting these requirements?: Pretty easy really. I needed time to go through the network since Audrey was told to reach back through the network in her first post. After that though she jumped in pretty easy.
Would you prefer more clearly defined requirements, or do you like the more open to interpretation system? I would rather have something more defined. I'm used to games with the whole '1 post + 1 log, 2 posts, 1 post/1 log + so many comments, # of comments' when it comes to AC.

Also when it comes to plot, sometimes there just isn't a place for your particular character to fit in. Audrey isn't the fighting type, at least not fists or things like that and self-defense training will only get you so far so things like the werewolf hunt would be beyond her. The snake statue bit was a nice inclusion and if plot is going to be a required part of AC, I'd like to see both fighting/action options and more 'nonviolent' sorts in all of the plots.

How quickly would you say it took you to reach the requirements? Just a few days.
General thoughts on the activity check: Simply more clearly defined rules on what counts as a good thread length, what doesn't, etc.

[personal profile] secondcomingof 2013-05-05 04:44 pm (UTC)(link)
We've got plenty of plot variety planned so that both fighters and non-fighters get an equal piece of the action, so not to worry on that front. There'll be things to do for characters of all backgrounds, rest assured.

Character: Hijikata Toshizou
Character Journal: [personal profile] redelivers
Plot Relevant Action: He fought some werewolves.
Thread 1: Thread with Saitou
Thread 2: Thread with the Hakuouki cast
Thread 3: Thread with the Hakuouki cast reprised
Thread 4: Action log I introduced him with

Character: Euphemia li Britannia
Character Journal: [personal profile] unfearing
Plot Relevant Action: She's been a little network activist and also joined in on werewolf hunting.
Thread 1: Thread with Saitou
Thread 2: Thread with Aaron
Thread 3: Thread with Banagher
Thread 4: Thread with Lelouch

Character: Amaimon
Character Journal: [personal profile] misgives
Plot Relevant Action: He helped Raiden run from the law!!! I'm not sure if this counts, but he got himself mauled by a werewolf. He was also very recently accepted so this is all I've got.
Thread 1: Thread with Raiden
Thread 2: Thread with Aragorn

How did you find meeting these requirements?: Wildly varying in difficulty from character to character. At the moment it seems really hard to do anything with people who aren't inclined to be active on the network. I'm not sure if that's a failing of mine or some mixture of my own shortcomings+the system itself. I'll keep trying at it, though.
Would you prefer more clearly defined requirements, or do you like the more open to interpretation system? I would like more clearly defined requirements personally. In the past I've been at games where making a top post counted for more than simply tagging other people, which I always appreciated because there would be times where I would make plans with other people that would fall through, leaving my characters with nothing to show come AC time. For example, I have Amaimon in three different logs but could only link two of them because one of them was never replied to. That said, I do appreciate that Euphie's 100+ comment top posts actually took care of most of her AC for me because that was a lot of time and effort.
How quickly would you say it took you to reach the requirements? With Euphie it took no time at all, likely less than a week, but with Hijikata it took most of the month for me to even come close.
General thoughts on the activity check: Having to dig up and provide four links per character is a bit of a time sink for me. I started this AC 20 minutes ago and only just finished. I completely understand making players pulling their own weight and staying involved, but I'm concerned about having to keep track of precise plot involvement will start to take away from the actual fun of joining in the fray of these plots. Also it's been extremely difficult to make activity for characters who arent partial to network-style posting or network type systems, and that concerns me a little. I don't want to have to stretch my characterization just to make AC/stay involved, but at this point if the AC stands as it is, I'm not sure what I'll be able to do with Amaimon and Hijikata in the coming months.

I think you make some good points here (so many that I can't really remark upon them all in-depth at the moment), but I'll just say I'm definitely forwarding them along to the other mods for review. People had a lot more to say on this than I anticipated so I think a MODLY DISCUSSION of sorts is definitely in order.

Thread 1: With Anthony.
Thread 2: With Bakura.
Thread 3: With Kotetsu.
Thread 4: With Colette.

How did you find meeting these requirements?: I found it rather easy to get involved in enough.
Would you prefer more clearly defined requirements, or do you like the more open to interpretation system? I'd kind of prefer more clearly defined requirements; it feels a bit amorphous at this point and tough to judge what's significant enough.
How quickly would you say it took you to reach the requirements? I had it done within a week.
General thoughts on the activity check: I like that we're encouraged to tag around and get CR with multiple characters, but digging up four links for each may be a bit much on those who play multiple characters, which may become more of an issue as the game continues.

Thread 3: Thread with Jack
Thread 4: Thread with Bakura

How did you find meeting these requirements?: Pretty easy, honestly.

Would you prefer more clearly defined requirements, or do you like the more open to interpretation system?

I both like it and dislike it. On the one hand, I do appreciate the effort to normalize threads with lots of tl;dr but a lower comment count versus a massive commentspam chain. However, "moderate" is something of a confusing term, as others have mentioned. I rather like the concept of a range. Or perhaps it can be something to the effect of "x number of comments OR x number of words"?

How quickly would you say it took you to reach the requirements? In approximately ten days maybe?
General thoughts on the activity check:

A couple things! One: This AC form has a section for plot relevant action, and then the links to four different threads. Does that mean we need four threads PLUS plot-relevant action, or four threads INCLUDING plot-relevant action?

Second, for example, if your plot-relevant action is something like the werewolf-hunting log in which there were multiple people in the thread, how does it count, exactly? In my particular case several of the people in that thread with me were ones I'd had threads of significant length previously, and I was unsure about linking it as a piece of activity itself considering that the characters in it were all characters I linked for the "threads with four different characters" part of the AC.

Third, posts! If you should make a plot-relevant post (i.e. Casval's LET'S GO KILL SOME WEREWOLVES or Chris's BOOYEAH STATUE VANDALISM) which gets many replies from several characters, does that count as both your plot-relevant action and your four threads?

Finally, are we required to link our evidence of plot-relevant action, or is it enough to simply state it? (Mostly I've seen people stating it on this post, but I haven't clicked all the links to be sure)

Thread 4: Berating Jack for being a drunkard.

How did you find meeting these requirements?: Not exceedinly difficult, I suppose, but I'm not entirely sure what "moderate length" entails.
Would you prefer more clearly defined requirements, or do you like the more open to interpretation system? I do like it being open to interpretation, although specific thread lengths would help. I'm not sure if I like the plot requirement - I understand why it's there, to ensure people stay engaged, but sometimes characters are just working through other things. We'll see how it goes - I'll probably have more feedback for that part after another month or two.
How quickly would you say it took you to reach the requirements? Two-three weeks.
General thoughts on the activity check: Seems to be working, so far.

Thread 4: Posty post

How did you find meeting these requirements?: Not as bad as I initially thought, to be honest!
Would you prefer more clearly defined requirements, or do you like the more open to interpretation system? I think I've seen it mentioned here before, but defining what a "moderate" thread length is would be nice. Maybe not necessarily giving an exact comment number (such as your character needing 15 comments), but I could be down with a thread counting if you hit, say, 10-15. Or whatever the mods say is sufficient enough. I'm pretty easy to please!
How quickly would you say it took you to reach the requirements? Probably about half a month, if that.
General thoughts on the activity check: I made it this time! So hopefully that will speak for the future, as well.

Thread 3: thread with colette brunel
Thread 4: thread with elizabeth bishop

How did you find meeting these requirements?: easy! though i do take it with a grain of salt, an explosive opening month is a little different from a game that's settling into itself. but as a slower tagger with an unpredictable schedule, the requirements aren't nearly as bad as they seem.
Would you prefer more clearly defined requirements, or do you like the more open to interpretation system? personally i like the open interpretation. it seems like it works well for a plot-heavy game, where it can even out longer commentspam chains or shorter and heftier tags. it doesn't lend itself to needlessly padding threads for the sake of a comment count. i've noticed that several of my own threads end way more naturally here as opposed to other games i've been in in the past.
How quickly would you say it took you to reach the requirements? taking backtagging into account, a couple of days to a week.
General thoughts on the activity check: as of now i'm definitely liking its flexibility.

Plus lots more! My activity be crazy, yo.

How did you find meeting these requirements?: Pretty damn easily. I slowed down once I picked up a job again, but threading isn't usually a problem with me since... well, I like to write. Go figure.
Would you prefer more clearly defined requirements, or do you like the more open to interpretation system? Neutral on this since I've never had an issue meeting AC nor do I anticipate it happening, but general consensus seems to be favoring the former from what I've seen and that's how most games seem to do it, so there you go.
How quickly would you say it took you to reach the requirements? ...within the first few days? I was excited about the game, man, I kinda went balls to the wall with tagging.
General thoughts on the activity check: Not much other than WOW sure was embarrassing for a mod to show up semi-late to this oops.

He's been rather scattered, and I'm sorry for that!

Cinderella-Rarity/[personal profile] destinedforrock also kept in mind, though she only got in on April 30th!

How did you find meeting these requirements?: April was in general an odd, chaotic month for me - if it hadn't been, I'd say it would've been cake.
Would you prefer more clearly defined requirements, or do you like the more open to interpretation system? I can appreciate openness to interpretation.
How quickly would you say it took you to reach the requirements? *glances uncertainly up at the presented brief threads*
Again, though, I don't think it'd need to take more than a week for someone for whom things are going smoothly!
General thoughts on the activity check: I think I'd like to second Sylver on a person who thinks their threads run short being encouraged to provide an extra proof or two. Other than that, I like the rules - participation in the plot and seeking reasonably wide CR!
