[Media digest] What does the fox say?
This is the first of what will be our roughly biweekly media posts! With the media starting to play a larger role, the purpose of this post is to be a digest and master post for everything that the media (newspapers, radio, TV, internet, etc) have said and will say. This post covers what gets aired/published about the numbered up until the 4th of August. This includes content created by both players and mods, regardless of if it stems from numbered and their allies, their opponents, or neutral third sources.
GUIDELINES
- You may either link to a post that you made which contained a media voice (like this) or or create small articles/opinion pieces/internet discussions/interviews/statements/etc and put them into the body of the comment, (like this).
- Please use this form:
- Please use the appropriate one of these threads (pre-20/7, 21/7-27/7,28/7-3/8) to link/post your media voices.
- If your media voice talks about a small group of reincarnates or one reincarnate in specific, please make sure that you have their players' permission to have the media talk about them in this way.
THE GENERAL CURRENT STATE OF THE MEDIA
- Both negative and positive voices regarding the numbered can be heard. The positive and neutral ones are still more numerous, but the number of negative sentiments has strongly increased as of very recently. There is talk about them having a startling amount of power that they are hiding and about reincarnate influence behind the scenes, and questioning if they have hidden plans and motifs that are sinister in nature.
- A local Locke newspaper runs a series on the reincarnates that is mostly critical opinion pieces about the numbered as a group. A local Locke radio station, Energy Up, fills its free broadcasting time with more or less fact-based pieces about the reincarnates, laced with gossip and speculations about their mental state and how dangerous they really are to the city. Fox News has run a 3-part reportage about the numbered in both cities in much the same spirit. A couple of other media outlets from both areas generally cover reincarnates and their actions or powers in a negative, sensationalistic, distrustful light, though they don't go out of their way to talk about them. But there still is an equal amount of news outlets that show them in a positive or neutral light.
- Currently, only the Energy Up radio station in Locke and no news outlet in Vegas runs pieces about specific numbered, and only about those that are high-profile in some shape or form - especially flashy, especially odd or powerful, or rich/celebrities/relatives of important people/etc.
- The internet is a vast place as well, and seedlings, conspiracy theorists and many others discuss the reincarnates - they might have fans or vicious haters here, self-proclaimed specialists on the numbered and so on. In general, the attitudes are fairly similar to those in the official media outlets.

And since we're already talking about weapons, Jim... more and more influential figures in this city turn out to be secretly numbered, and one of them seems to be Thorir T. Thorsson of Thorsson's hardware. That tall guy with the tall kids? Soon going to be shorter than his dogs. He's going down like a Thai hooker, apparently. [The host laughs, and Jim on the other end laughs slightly uncomfortably as well.] And while Carol was asking people on the streets how they're doing, one brought up a point about him...
[Another man's voice replaces the radio host's. There is a sound of cars in the background.] ...you gotta wonder if it's a good idea to let someone who is changing like that have direct access to such a large store of weapons as his stores give him. I mean, even if he's okay now, shrinking like that has to do something to a guy's brain, right? Who'd want to be that short, I ask. Gotta drive a guy insane, to suddenly have your girl tower over you like that - have you seen his wife? I tell you, man, hotter than her age should allow for, but also a freaking giant like he used to be, I bet there'll be enough guys figuring that this is their chance now. And if he goes off the rocker with anger, I'd really not want to know such a large arsenal in his hands. Nah, I'll keep out of there for now.
[And back to the host.] I haven't seen his wife yet, she'd be too old for me either way, but you gotta keep an eye out for a guy who fears becoming a cuckold. [he laughs at his own words like they were a good joke] This is Energy Up, and next up is Maroon 5 with Maps!

Type of media/location if applicable: The radio program "This American Life" devoted an hour-long piece to how Locke is handling the numbered. It's a few acts, each act focusing on one person, family, or place, with some interviewing aspects but narrated by an unrelated party.
Link/Content: Act One, a short piece, is from the POV of Gwen Gould, 42, the proprietor of Tickled Ink, a small tattoo parlor. It briefly covers how her life and parlor have been affected by the events of the past year or so. It took damage during Wise Snake, "superheroes" are seen from time to time, artists moving out of town, declining client base, Gwen Gould is deeply ambivalent.
"One day in comes Julien Sakazaki, the Locke City Harpy. Seven feet of feathers and impossibly long legs. He comes in, and he wants a custom piece, a short quote. Only it's not in English. It's this foreign phrase - [to be added later].
Julien's asked what it means, and he says it's "Experience, life, and love make it normal." He's smiling but Gwen is struck by the thought that it's off. Then he tells her about the potential complications. One, his skin is about the thickness and texture of eyelid skin, all over, and doesn't sweat. Two, his temperature is unnaturally high. Three he only has so much featherless skin available, and he wants it to be something he can see without a mirror. She can get around the third easy enough. Just write it on his side or down his leg. One and two are weird.
"So he said I should check and I touched his neck, since he barely had hands. It was like finding the pulse on a baby with a high fever." She's kind of tempted to turn him away. "I wasn't sure about inviting trouble. I thought, I can't trust this to the other artists, but if I get this wrong I'll look terrible." What convinces her is how he could be good publicity. Tourists love the Locke City Harpy. It could turn the shop around. And he's a nice enough guy.
So they make the arrangements. Deciding on the font and positioning. It'll be down the outside of his leg, from his hip to about his ankle. He comes in early with a friend, older than him, tough-looking. Moral support. Gwen sees it all the time. It's awkward getting a guy with a tail and wings settled into the chair, but the preliminaries go smoothly enough. She smears on a gel that'll numb the area and it works perfect. And that thin tight skin is fast and easy to mark. No problem, she thinks.
It's a minute into inking that the problem appears. He starts bleeding under the needle. His skin is that thin. That happens sometimes. "And I looked over and checked and his friend was stroking his hair, and he was just crying. No noise at all. I checked on him and he said I'm okay, keep going."
So she's sitting there with a crying birdman who's getting his head petted, and it's a pretty surreal moment. Gwen gets plenty of people who don't react well to their first time being inked, who act a lot like that. He must really want that line. Gwen's a professional. Her client wants her to keep going, she keeps going and gets the job done.
A week later and she's seen two people walk in referred by him.
In this week's program, life in Locke. Ordinary men and women, affected by those famous events, renegotiating what it is to be normal."
[Listeners who understand Elvish can understand that the quote is actually "Experience, life, and love make a human"]

Link/Content: The ensuing piece might have gotten a bit more interest as a submission for publication from the same factor that's coloring any post-publication talk about it - the name attached to it is one of a missing Locke City teen. Since the text in itself doesn't prove itself, there's obligatory doubt here and there on everything from whether it's actually from who the writer says they are to whether all of it's a hoax - but it is true, a zombie was brought into one of Locke's hospitals in early June, and Anthony Janvier did see his parents once over the past year...
