Plot Post for October 15th!
This format of plot post is designed for players to ask questions and find ways to influence the plot. Be bold and ask what you can or can't do; the worst that can happen is that we will say no. As plots in Save the Earth are not self resolving nor on a time limit, they can evolve in many ways. Although some potential outcomes are given, they are little more than suggestion and can be changed by character action. What role you take is up to you.
The post is also open for players to plot and coordinate between one another.
Events occurring currently:
• The baseline intensity of the buzzing sound is continuing to steadily increase - hopefully for the sake of your mental peace you’ve gotten better at tuning it out!
And speaking of tuning, the sound, likewise, only continues to pick up as one approaches Tuning Towers. However, anyone interested in investigating to see if the cause is accordingly just starting to surface are strongly advised not to get too close; quite suddenly, police presence will be constant inside and surrounding the towers. The very occasional officer on patrol will be accompanied by an apparent sniffer dog - a beagle, larger than average size with a somewhat long and bulbous muzzled snout. The average civilian would likely assume it to be further effort in line with the supposed drug scare that surfaced in the summer - but anyone capable of recognizing them and who isn’t scared off may make a connection on noticing that Thunder Corp.-owned vehicles will from here on out be consistently seen parked very close to the Towers.
• There is something afoot in the Dead District again. Move roughly into the vicinity of where the first snake statue once stood and you are very likely going to notice the buzzing sound growing louder - in three different directions, unrelated to the position of Tuning Towers. Stay still and the intensity will ever so slightly change, as if the source - or sources - are very steadily moving.
You can follow the sound, as you’ve all been doing to Tuning Towers, to said sources - and what you’ll find them to be, in fact, three apparent statues, shaped like bipedal snakes and made of a pink stone, very much in the style of those that have been seen before by sculptor David Proud. And they’re animated - and aggressive. They’re slow-moving, but flexible as real snakes and every bit as heavy and hard hitting as they appear. Those legs of theirs are indeed functional, too - however, they’ll give up on chasing any who come across them on losing track of them or on their target drawing them far enough from the spot of the initial encounter.
Again, there is at max three of these beings, so if you intend to try and kill one, it might be best to coordinate your efforts.
Mentions of the things will appear in the media and word of mouth - but only in a disbelieving way by news and law enforcement alike. The upper levels of the police seem utterly unconcerned about any trouble there, with the regular patrols there as regular as ever.
• Those will not be the only odd and unexpected new presences about the city that could bear noticing - you will from time to time spot the occasional shifty figure skulking around public areas close to but not directly within the boundaries of the Dead District, but with nothing to mark them as suspicious apart from their behavior: on-guard, watching activity in the areas they’re shadowing like hawks - from both the ground and from buildings/structures that provide an overlooking view. The skulking is all they do, and then they sneak off.
In addition, making appearances crossing the sky here and there in the city will be helicopters - or, perhaps, just a single helicopter - black and with no apparent identifiers such as markings or embellishments, fairly sleek in design and not, apparently, of any police or military model.
• All the while, spells of zoning out have been occurring and will continue to occur in occupied public areas; not only are they becoming more regular, one who’s been finding them a particular curiosity will find the variance in size of the zone in which people seem to be affected increasing. You may find one cluster of twenty people in the mall slipping out of it and another cluster of the same size doing the same two minutes later - and nearly half the floor going unsettlingly spaced-out in another ten. Meanwhile, reincarnates will, if caught in the apparent area of the effect, find a little feeling of mysterious mirth creeping up on them-- unless they've only recently moved to the city (or otherwise were not exposed to the tainted water, in other words).
Events occurring in the immediate future:
• On October 23rd, something is occurring. Expect to see an additional plot post up on that day with the details!
Events potentially occurring in the immediate future:
• From this point on, approach of and/or apprehension under any circumstances by a non-"numbered" police officer poses a very great risk. Crossing too close by an officer accompanied by a dog guarantees that a PC will be taken into custody, and any who might be taken in for a "visit" to the station for any reason will likely find a dog being brought in to "check" them. Characters taken in are unlikely to be killed - but can very likely expect, without rescue or intervention, an interrogation by Det. Jason Sherman.
Potential Echo Opportunities
Visits to Tuning Towers will continue to grant Echoes - one per character making a first visit - if one is willing to risk showing with the new constant observation by the police. Engaging one of the creatures in the Dead District - for the first time - will also grant one Echo.
Please direct questions regarding these plot points to the thread below and not the post in general.

Re: GENERAL QUESTIONS
Addendum to thing 1: Is it ICly reasonable to avoid a forced-laughter response for OOC reasons? I discovered during the tainted water thing that I am actually significantly uncomfortable with playing out uncontrollable/forced laughter so I'd like to avoid that in the future...
Thing 2: What IS likely to happen to characters if they are taken in and get interrogated by Det. Sherman? Will they be released? Or does it depend on how the interrogation goes?
Thing 3: If an expedition was organized to explore the sewers and locate whatever was the source of the buzzing, what could characters expect to find?
Shit, Wait, I Wasn't Done Yet, Thing 4: Is the zoning out/mirth related to any kind of toxicity, ie can Ravi's detox spell do anything about it?
no subject
2. A character's fate if brought in for interrogation does depend on how the interrogation would go at this time, although in all cases they ought to anticipate that they might not come out of it unscathed or unruffled - Sherman is, to put it mildly, a bit of a dishonorable bastard.
3. Characters entering the sewers near Tuning Towers would find the buzzing stronger than ever - but still not be able to close in on the source. Unfortunately, whatever it is is further down than characters will have any already-existing access to.
4. Ravi's abilities will be able to dispel the apparent aftereffects of tainted water consumption, indeed!
no subject
Followup for 3 since I am ~*heading an expedition*~ ICly to investigate the source of the buzzing and stop it.
So that means sewers, abandoned subway tunnels, etc are not going to be deep enough to reach the source, yeah? Would it be possible for PCs to forcibly open an access to it? Like say through terrakinetic abilities (like Earthbending and whatnot)? (I have no idea if there's anybody in-game yet with powers strong enough to handle that, but it's worth asking.)
Barring that, is there access to it through other means? Such as through a basement level of Tuning Towers?
no subject
And there are subterranean levels of Tuning Towers - currently off-limits to the general public and, so one who inquires might hear, being worked in by Thunder Corp. Characters would be allowed to try to poke around underground in/through them, but it'd take a bit of stealth.
no subject
I think we have quite a few volunteers who are capable of stealth, so that may indeed be a possibility! I may have some follow-up questions, let me get back to you on that.
no subject
Oh! So I know headphones and such don't drown out the noise, but do earplugs work at all to dampen it?
And are the phantom tremors stronger the closer you get to the source? (ie stronger underground around the towers than aboveground in the same area)
no subject
Yep.
:D
