SO HOW ABOUT THAT KIDNAPPING, EARTHICANS. IT SURE IS A THING.



Spoilers: Albero is telling the truth. If the Numbered do nothing, Robyn will be released without any further incident this evening. The reincarnates will then be given a short grace period of two weeks to get out of Locke, during which no attacks will take place. Any reincarnates who publically make it look as if they are leaving the city will be left alone during this period.

Unfortunately, people who - for example - involve themselves in a risky rescue attempt will not be granted this temporary amnesty. Not only will they find that the resident damsel in distress is guarded by more than just your typical mafia thugs, but the future ramifications of their actions will be severe.

There are subthreads below for planning the rescue attempt (if any characters will go ahead with it), trying to stop the rescue attempt, and for notifying us if your character will pretend to/leave the city! Feel free to also start your own threads for other purposes. 8|b

How soon would consequences come on for anyone involved in a rescue attempt? (Specifically, I'm curious as to whether it would be likely be mutually exclusive with any plans made for this weekend!)

Nick would definitely try to dissuade him from this! He'd skip attempting to convince him not to go through vague means, and just go straight to telling him that Albero has no reason not to release Robyn. And let Anthony know that there is a Vermaxi waiting for anyone who attempts to rescue Robyn.

After a lot of talking and convincing, Ariel eventually agrees to go and makes all the signs of going. She will pack up her things from the condo (keeping the keys of course) and probably fly her cats out there (because she isn't going to fling them into a swimming pool through a portal or suffer a 4 day drive with 4 cats.) She will also convince her family to leave as well and move to LV.

However she fully intends to come back to Locke, once the mountain is secure and some of the heat is taken off her since she has tangled with the mafia before.

Anthony'd try to go along anyway, even if only for the sake of anyone else who'd still be going - even more rather than less on being told of the Vermaxi, as aye, knowledge is some superficial amount of power! - unless Nick would try to physically prevent him or unless it was guaranteed that Robyn would be released anyway, in which case he'd probably throw in his lot with those attempting the rescue; anything would be a preferable alternative to standing down from trying to assist at all.

He wouldn't physically stop him, and he definitely wouldn't be opposed to Anthony warning anyone who is going of what might be in store for them - as long as Anthony doesn't tell them that he got the information from Nick!

He can't 100% guarantee that Robyn will be released anyway, but he can probably 98% guarantee it, and he'll definitely say that a rescue attempt is more likely to get her killed than stopping a rescue attempt. And.... promise to explain how he knows all this after she's safe.

You can safely assume that there'll be at least a week or two's breathing space while Albero makes preparations and totally not because Kira and I are going to be super busy or anything geez. Weekend plans should make it through unscathed! 83

I just accidentally hit on a question I probably should have asked sooner... anyway. For our unfortunate saps that start school... well, now... how will the mafia handle them? In quite a few cases, "leave" isn't feasible - where would they go? They'd have to move somewhere outside Locke, then actually transfer schools, then transfer again when (if?) things finally cooled down. We could move them to Vegas, but would they all be able to start school there? Is that realistically an option? Basically, I'm wondering if the 21-and-under crowd need to consider alternative education.

Say someone who may or may not be very stern goes to the FBI, or harasses someone affiliated with them, or is working with them in one case OR WHATEVER...

Regardless, someone rolls up and brings it to the Feds attention. "Yo. You know this girl was kidnapped. She got used to deliver a message. They're threatening us. All of us. One of us already had their mother murdered by them. They are going to try and kill us all, probably, and here is the threat we were issued. You may not be able to see it, but I can describe it to the letter and you have people working with you who can verify I'm right on the money. What are you guys doing about it?"

The mafia simply does not care what logistic problems a move out of Locke would cause a numbered. Jobless? School? Have kids or old parents that you are the caretaker of? Just bought a house? Run a company? Sentient tree located in the city park and literally rooted to the ground? They don't care, they don't want numbered in the city no matter what their circumstances are.

There is of course the option to pretend to be gone and just hide, or to pretend to leave for good and not plan on actually doing it, or to just stay and toughen it out/take the risk...

[for the following keep in mind that neither of the head mods is American and we might be missing US-specific difficulties of transferring in this answer] Locke schools/colleges/etc won't be sad to see numbered students go and make it easy on them, and the same goes for Locke's administration: If the student nominally transfers to a school in the Las Vegas echo boundaries or switches to "being homeschooled" they'll easily give them a leave.

The Las Vegas schools in the echo area are closed until the situation is straightened out one way or the other, but they will accept students transferring to them.

The FBI will reassure the person that they're aware of the issue and are doing what they can, but that the nature of the case (and any network-based evidence) mean their options are limited. If pressed about the Robyn incident in particular, they will claim to have spoken with a representative for Mr. Albero who has assured them that Shades McPonytail has a watertight alibi and couldn't possibly have made these threats.

Alibis would be expected, the man is a professional after all. :p But if they are aware of it, what of the people and their families being threatened? Are they advocating listening to him, or will they be taking any measures towards countering anything, or just... "Good luck, don't get shot?"

That does largely take care of my concerns, yes. Winter's specific problem is college, but college is handily not compulsory - she can wait until things (hopefully?) calm down in Locke and start later, or possibly apply to UNLV in hopes of starting in the spring there. (Or to a school in the third Echo barrier, if one exists... might need to pull up Google Earth and do some research later, cough.)

MEANING they will offer protection to anyone who approaches them with concern about being a target (as long as they provide details etc), but they won't actively pursue Albero or go out of their way to help. The attitude seems largely to be "throw an armed guard at them, that's enough to show we've made an effort."
